Guide to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Student Chapter at UCF

What is AIAA?
The non-profit American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is the principle society and voice serving the aerospace profession.  AIAA is an internationally recognized organization that was established to enhance the knowledge of astronautics and aeronautics for people in the industry and for students.  Its primary purpose is to advance the arts, sciences, and technology of aeronautics and astronautics and to foster and promote the professionalism of those engaged in these pursuits.

What is the student Chapter for?
The AIAA UCF student chapter is here for students to help further their education in Aerospace and Aeronautics while acquiring their degree at the university level.  Although the majority of us are Aerospace majors, there is still a level of diversity in the group.  From different engineering majors to music and business majors, each person brings a different aspect to the group.

What do we do in the AIAA UCF Student Chapter?
Build, learn, volunteer, and have fun.  These are the things that you can experience while being an active participant in the UCF AIAA Student Chapter.  Throughout the year there is always an ongoing project.  For example, we have participated in the SAE Heavy Lift competition and the Cessna/ONR Design/Build/Fly Electric Airplane competition in the past and will continue to do so in the future.  As we complete these projects each year, a learning experience is created for everyone in the group.  When building the planes (usually completed in the spring) undergraduates are encouraged to help out with the projects so they may learn a few tricks of the trade before taking their Senior Design classes.  Although we do a lot of building, we also do a lot of volunteer work.  One of the main things we do is volunteer once a moth for Young Eagles.  UCF AIAA helps sign up and escort kids between the ages of 7-17 to fly in a Cessna, Mooney, or Long-EZ aircraft which are volunteered by pilots (who are also the ones to fly the kids) associated with EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association).  At most meetings a speaker is asked to come in from industry or right here at the university to talk about anything pertaining to aeronautics, astronautics, or advice for students in the major. After all of this hard work we do like to have a bit of fun.  Trips to air shows, museums, shuttle launches, and conferences are just a few of the other activities we like to do.

How can I get involved?
First of all, attend our meetings.  Meetings are held weekly in the Fall and Spring semesters and biweekly in the summer.  In our meetings we talk events and usually have either a speaker or presentation.

Are there Dues?
Yes, if you find you would like to join, Student Chapter dues are $20 each year and includes a free club t-shirt.  This money will go into our budget so we can provide basic things for our club.  If you would like a national student membership, it is also $20.  We do not require you to be a national member, but it will give you access to various resources online, get you in to AIAA conferences, and you will receive the magazine Aerospace America every month.  Apply for national AIAA membership at www.aiaa.org.

Any suggestions?
We are always trying to make our club better for our members.  If you have any suggestions as to what we can do to improve our club or if there is some thing you think we should be doing, let any of the officers know, they will be happy to listen.  Or you can drop a note under the AIAA office door, Engr1 Room 148.
