- Linux is a kernel. Many of the commonly used applications that have been used in Linux since its inception (tar, grep, ls, cp, mv, etc...) are GNU utilities.

- An opensource project hosting website. A large percentage of the opensource applications used in the world can be found on this website.

- Slackware
- Slackware is a very BSD-like Linux Operating System. It is also one of the original Linux distributions.
- Redhat
- Redhat was one of the original Linux distributions. It was free to use up until Redhat 9. Now you have to pay for Redhat if you want to use it.
- Fedora Core
- Fedora Core is what Redhat created as a testbed for it's new operating systems. Fedora Core is free for anyone to download.
- Mandriva
- Mandriva (formerly Mandrake) was a fork of Redhat Linux (when it use to be free).
- Debian
- Debian comes in three flavors: Stable, Testing, and Unstable.
- Ubuntu
- Ubuntu is based off of Debian Linux but is both more stable and more up to date, and has gained huge momentum in the Linux community since it has had great success in being easy to use and in getting hardware to work with Linux.
- Gentoo
- Gentoo Linux is a Linux Operating System not meant for the faint of heart. It's the Linux Operating System that compiles everything you use. It's also the Linux system that lets you really have the chance to get to know your system and how it works.

- FreeBSD
- FreeBSD is renowned for it's performance on Servers.
- NetBSD
- NetBSD is renowned for it's ability to run on a vast variety of computer architectures.
- OpenBSD
- OpenBSD is renowned for it's focus on security and clean code (without bugs). It has a rigorous code auditing system as well as a 6 month release schedule - meaning that a new version is always available every 6 months. OpenBSD is also responsible for the famous OpenSSH project as well as PF (packet filter) .
